Question time for Samaranch
by Andy McKenzie

Under-fire International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch is to field questions over an expenses claim to his wife prior to the Atlanta Olympics.
  • Samaranch will appear at a hearing of the House commerce subcommittee on oversight and investigations on December 14. He is expected to be quizzed over the $12,000 expenses payment to his wife and a friend by Atlanta bid committee members in 1990, during their trip to Savannah, Ga. and Charleston, S.C.

  • Samaranch said the visit of his wife, Maria Teresa, received the approval of former US Vice President Dan Quayle and that she only accepted the invitation because he was unable to attend himself.

  • Atlanta officials have already admitted they violated the IOC's rules when lobbying for the 1996 Games. However, they denied the gifts were intended to buy votes for their bid to host the games, which was ultimately successful.
