Donovan Bailey
Canada's Donovan Bailey

Greek tragedy for Bailey
by Andy McKenzie

Donovan Bailey's struggles continued when he was disqualified from the men's 60m at the IAAF indoor meeting in Athens, Greece on February 9.

  • The Olympic 100m champion from Canada saw his hopes of getting back to winning ways end with two false starts.

  • The 32-year-old Bailey returned to action at the end of January after seeing his career threatened by an Achilles injury in September 1998.

  • But the Canadian has struggled to find the form that saw him break the 100m world record and take gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA.

  • His compatriot Bruny Surin also had an off day, making a poor start and having to settle for fourth place in a time of 6.55 seconds.

  • Britain's Jason Gardner carried on his impressive form by winning a photo finish in a time of 6.51, ahead of Georgios Theodoridis of Greece - who clocked the same time - and Fredy Mayola of Cuba.
